It actually looks as if these cards had units. This example looks like it has usage marks, but the idea was that only customer account information would normally be recorded on such a card, so it is more likely a pattern of strikes identifies the customer ID.
The reverse of these cards has machine score grooves along the edge of the optical stripe. Why? Who can tell us now?

Toward the end of the Frankfurt trials some preparation was begun for further trials. Cards with thermal band were investigated, with a 92 unit trial printed as a specimen. This was followed by some internal trials of Kredit and Debit (40 unit and 80 unit) cards, but the Frankfurt trial ends with the selection of Siemens Chip cards chosen for the National phonecard telephone network.
