Though Visa international took an interest in smart card technology as early as 1992, the first demonstration card came in 1994, at the Visa International annual conference, at Cancún, Mexico. with an issued quantity of 1500 cards.

Other conference cards followed, and soon after pilot trials began in a few countries.
