Geldkarte

Field trials of the new Geldkarte cash cards took place in Ravensburg, and Weingarten in Germany during 1996. Cards could be used at participating merchants, but the dedicated vending machines are what contributed greatly to the success of Geldkarte. The DOB (date of Birth) of owner of the card was registered on the card restricting Cigarette vending machines from selling to underage people.
Cards can be topped up at most ATM machines to a maximum of 200 euros.
Many banks began issuing Geldkarte after the trial, and Banks now issue cards with contactless Geldkarte functionality branded “Girogo”
Most transactions are small averaging 3 euros.
