In 1988, GTECH Corporation—then the world's dominant provider of online lottery systems and computer networks—hosted its prestigious annual Users Conference at Pebble Beach, California.
While specific workshop agendas or attendee rolls from this 1988 event are confined to archived corporate records, the conference took place during a defining era for the company:
• Market Dominance: By 1988, GTECH supplied centralized technology and terminals for the vast majority of state-run lotteries across the United States and international markets.
• The "Users" Network: The conference gathered GTECH's primary "users"—who were actually high-ranking state lottery directors, government officials, and international gaming administrators—to preview new terminal hardware, encryption technology, and transactional software.
