Description

TMC RECITEL Demo (Minitel/Publicarte). Oberthur CP8 ISO chip.
A number of Smartcards, BULL and others bear RECITEL Logos, but this one is a TMC demo.

Founded in 1982 (the exact same year Minitel launched commercially), Récitel was a French electronics and software engineering company that specialized in high-tech security, logic, and physical access control systems.
While the Minitel network and terminals themselves were primary developments of France Télécom (the PTT) and large industrial manufacturers like Alcatel, Telic, and Matra, Récitel engaged with Minitel through the hardware integration side:
• Smart Card Technology & Readers: As a Value-Added Reseller (VAR) for Gemplus—the world leader in smart cards—Récitel designed, manufactured, and sold chip card readers, encoders, and electronic software systems. During the late 1980s and 1990s, French telematics heavily adopted smart card slots on advanced Minitel models (such as the Minitel 2 and Minitel Magis) to handle safe electronic banking, point-of-sale security, and secure transaction authentication.
• Acquisition: Récitel operated successfully in this early secure-telematics and hardware space until it was acquired by the major security firm Securitas in 1996.
